Rules and Regulations Governing the
Testing of Milk For Milkfat, Protein and Lactose Content By Automated Instrument
Methods, (2 VAC 5-520)
This regulation establishes laboratory test methods which must be used to determine fat, solids, and protein content of milk if the tests results are to be used in determining the value of milk for payment purposes. Personnel who perform the tests and the laboratory facility must be inspected and certified also. Dairy farms are paid for milk shipped to processors based on the amount of milk delivered and the laboratory tests results for fat, solids, and protein. Certification and inspection helps to ensure accurate and fair milk pricing to the producer as well as the buyer.
