H1N1 FLU

VDACS is monitoring the current outbreak of H1N1 flu in the United States and abroad. H1N1 flu is not a threat to the food supply. According to the Centers for Disease Control, you cannot get H1N1 influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. There are no reports of H1N1 flu in pigs in Virginia. Our monitoring program is aimed at detecting the illness early in pigs, and we are encouraging producers to maintain strict biosecurity, which is already part of their standard practice.
