Contact: Elaine J. Lidholm, 804.786.7686

Employees of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) and the Virginia Poultry Federation will be at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Wednesday, June 20, when 8.500 pounds of turkey are unloaded. The food bank is at 96 Laurel Hill Road, Verona, VA 24482.

At 10 a.m., staff from the food bank will unload a truckload of turkey products donated by three Virginia poultry processors in the Shenandoah Valley: Cargill, the Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative and Perdue. The donation will include more than 8,500 pounds of frozen whole birds, frozen bone-in turkey breasts, ready-to-cook turkey breasts and fully cooked turkey deli meat. The donation will provide healthy protein as part of a meal for 7,000 food insecure people in the area.

Matt Lohr, VDACS Commissioner, will present Governor Bob McDonnell’s proclamation for Turkey Lovers’ Month and Frank Tamberrino, President and CEO of the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County Chamber of Commerce, will explain how Chambers of Commerce across the state are participating in the “Governor’s Bowl” Food and Fund Drive challenge with donations such as this one.
