RABIES WORKSHOPS SCHEDULED IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, MANASSAS PARK AND NEWPORT NEWS

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) encourages Animal Control Officers, Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators, Wildlife Rehabilitators and Apprentices and state wildlife personnel to attend one of three free rabies seminars offered this spring by the USDA Wildlife Services and other state agencies and organizations. Rabies and Wildlife: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe will be offered March 3 in Charlottesville, April 21 in Manassas Park and April 28 in Newport News. Animal Control Officers and Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators will receive continuing education credits at the completion of the day-long course.
Although the seminars are free, presenters strongly encourage participants to pre-register. A form is available online at http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/animals/pdf/rabiesform.pdf or by calling 804.864.8133. Participants should fill out and fax the registration form to Catherine McManus at 804.864.8131 or e-mail it to Catherine.mcmanus@vdh.virginia.gov. If the course is not full, participants may register on site the day of the seminar.
Topics will include an overview of the rabies virus, use of personal protective equipment, animal capture techniques, handling and euthanasia techniques, sample submission and reporting, wildlife laws and regulations, public relations and interacting with the public, bats and bat damage management, and a question-and-answer wrap-up.
