EHV-1 INFORMATION FOR LLAMA AND ALPACA OWNERS
Contact: Elaine Lidholm, 804.786.7686
Although rare, llamas and alpacas may become naturally and experimentally infected with Equine Herpes Virus type 1 (EHV-1). The virus can cause fever, neurological problems, blindness and sudden death in these species. Alpaca and llama owners are encouraged to practice tight biosecurity if in contact with horses, horse housing, trailers, facilities, supplies, equipment or people who have recently handled horses.
More information on biosecurity can be found by clicking here or here. For more specific recommendation, contact your regular veterinarian.
