Nat'lGuardXercise2013.jpgOn May 21, 2013, eight Virginia National Guard Soldiers from the Martinsville-based 1173rd Transportation Company loaded approximately 9,000 pounds of pet sheltering supplies for transport to a storage location in the Southwest Virginia area. The transport mission was conducted in concert with a three-day disaster exercise at the Virginia Emergency Operations Center (VEOC) in Richmond and other locations statewide. Participating were state and local emergency response personnel from ten state agencies, three universities, two hospitals and the counties of Augusta, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Halifax/South Boston, Harrisonburg, Lunenburg, Nelson, Orange, Montgomery, Pulaski and Rockingham.

The exercise tests coordination and communication between state and local officials, hospitals, universities and members of the private sector. In addition, event coordinators evaluated the ability to communicate emergency information to the public and the effectiveness of social media.
