Plant Pest Survey and Detection

Personnel in OPIS are constantly working to collect and manage data on plant pests of concern to Virginia. This includes insects, weeds, and plant diseases. Much of the work is conducted in cooperation with the USDA Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service. The Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS) Program provides national and regional coordination and funding.

Below is a listing of some of the current pest programs in Virginia with links for more information.

Giant Salvinia
Eradicated in 2005. Subsequent surveys have been negative.

Asian Soybean Rust (ASR)
According to Virginia Tech Extension Service, “If ASR moves into Virginia, it is manageable. Correct fungicide selection and application timing can minimize yield loss.” Click here for more information on this disease and its affects on Virginia crops.

Sudden Oak Death (Phytophthora ramorum)
P. ramorum remains undetected in Virginia and surveys for its presence are ongoing.

Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB)
Not currently found in Virginia.

Gypsy Moth

Don't Move Firewood.
