Plant and Pest Services

Plant Pest Survey and Detection

Personnel in OPPS are constantly working to collect and manage data on plant pests of concern to Virginia. This includes insects, weeds, and plant diseases. Much of the work is conducted in cooperation with the USDA Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service. The Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS) Program provides national and regional coordination and funding.

Below is a listing of some of the current pest programs in Virginia with links for more information.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)
EAB has been found again in northern Virginia. EAB has now been detected in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Maryland.

Giant Salvinia
Eradicated in 2005. Subsequent surveys have been negative.

Soybean Rust
Ongoing surveys for soybean rust. Click here for more information.

Sudden Oak Death (PR)
VDACS personnel will conduct SOD surveys in 2008. SOD remains undetected in Virginia.

Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB)
Not currently found in Virginia.

Gypsy Moth
