The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) rang in the new year by unveiling a redesigned website—the agency’s most significant online update in more than a decade. The new, mobile-friendly site features a fresh look, improved navigation and streamlined content to better meet the needs of Virginians who rely on VDACS’ many programs and services.

“Like other state agencies, VDACS continues to see increased visits to our website,” said VDACS Commissioner Sandra J. Adams. “We recognize the importance of our digital presence and initiated this redesign to create a mobile-friendly, updated and easier-to-navigate site. We are confident these enhancements will greatly improve communication and service to our diverse stakeholders.”

Responsible for more than 60 Virginia laws and 70 regulations, VDACS is organized into four units, each with a multitude of programs—the Commissioner’s Office, the Division of Animal and Food Industry Services, the Division of Consumer Protection and the Division of Marketing and Development. Despite this complexity, the agency developed a streamlined, audience-focused site with key information front and center. Website visitors will find what they need, whether it’s information on the agency’s laboratories, inspection or grading services, requesting a pesticide business license, registering a charitable organization or accessing content on numerous other VDACS programs and services.

The new homepage features drop-down menus customized for the agency’s audience of farmers, businesses and consumers. Icons help users quickly identify featured programs and services. Rotating background images represent the Commonwealth’s top agricultural commodities.

VDACS worked with Virginia Interactive, LCC on the project. Virginia Interactive contributed to the development of the site and provided usability, accessibility and testing services. A wholly owned subsidiary of NIC, Virginia Interactive is the driving force behind more than 50 state agency and local websites, online services, mobile applications and secure payment processing solutions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

VDACS invites the public to browse and explore its website, vdacs.virginia.gov.
