2015 Final Tobacco Estimates
Production, most yields and acreage were down from 2014

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced today that the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Services has released the final production estimate of Virginia flue-cured tobacco for 2015. Production was 49.5 million pounds, down eight percent from the 54.0 million pounds produced in 2014. Average yield was 2,300 pounds per acre, down 100 pounds from the 2014 crop. Acreage harvested was 21,500 acres, down 1,000 acres from 2014. Average price per pound was estimated at $2.03 per pound, down five cents from the previous year. Flue-cured production for the United States totaled 486.3 million pounds, down 15 percent from 2014.
Virginia dark fire-cured tobacco production totaled 575,000 pounds, down 21 percent from the 2014 crop. Harvested acreage totaled 250, down 80 acres from 2014. Yield at 2,300 pounds per acre was up 100 pounds. The price received by farmers was $2.14 per pound, down four cents from the 2014 price.
Burley tobacco production totaled 2.4 million pounds, down 18 percent from the 2014 production. Farmers harvested 1,300 acres of burley tobacco with a yield of 1,850 pounds per acre. Harvested acreage was down 200 acres from 2014 and yield was down 100 pounds. Price received per pound by farmers was $1.97, up one cent from the previous year.
