Contact: Elaine Lidholm, 804.786.7686

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced today a free conference for fruit and vegetable growers in southeast Virginia and eastern North Carolina. The Feb. 20 event will take place on the campus of Old Dominion University in the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center, 1030 University Blvd., Suffolk, Va. 23435.

In the morning group session, growers will hear from regional experts about new products for weed control, current pest issues and pesticide safety. It also will include Private Pesticide Applicator re-certification credit. The Grower Spotlight will feature Ben Miller, owner and operator of Miller Farms Market in Locust Grove. The afternoon program offers information on growing cucurbits, tomatoes and peppers, and berries. From 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., growers may have their produce scales checked by VDACS’ weights and measures inspectors.

Farmers who call the Chesapeake Cooperative Extension Office no later than Feb. 13 will receive a free lunch. Registration is available by calling 757.382.6348 or emailing elaine7@vt.edu.

The conference is presented by Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
