Christmas tree farming is a major agricultural industry in Virginia with more than a million trees harvested and sold annually from hundreds of farms throughout the state. Virginia growers offer a wide selection of trees in a wide range of sizes. Consumers may choose and cut their own tree or purchase a freshly cut or live tree. Virginia ’s Christmas tree industry is a participant in the Virginia’s Finest trademark program. Growers whose trees meet standards set by the industry and approved by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) may apply to use the trademark. Look for Virginia ’s Finest trees this holiday season.

Caring For Your Tree

As soon as you get your tree home, make a fresh straight 1/4-inch cut across the base of the trunk. Place your tree in a bucket or tree stand containing water. Don’t let the base of the tree dry out or a new sap seal will form and a new cut will be necessary. Keep your stand full of water. A Christmas tree may absorb a gallon of water in the first 24 hours it is up and several quarts a day thereafter.

Christmas trees like to be cool and out of drafts, so don’t put them near a fireplace, heat source, or TV set.

Be sure that the light cords and connections you use are in good working order before hanging them to ensure a safe and joyous holiday season. Don’t forget to unplug lights when you go to bed or leave home.
