In the summer of 2010, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) sponsored a Virginia Grown Farmers’ Market Photo Contest in celebration of Virginia Farmers’ Market Week. Individuals were invited to submit photos that showcased the beauty and abundance of Virginia agricultural products and farmers’ markets. There were separate categories for children 12 and under, youth 12 to 20 and adults 21 and over, and the market receiving the most entries would receive a special prize, as well. From nearly 75 entries received, the 2010 winners were:
Child category: Sammy Thompson of Vienna, Age 10 – “Flowers” photo taken at the Oakton Farmers’ Market
Youth entry: Lauren Shaffer of Williamsburg, Age 20 – “Tomatoes” photo taken at the Williamsburg Farmers’ Market
Adult category: Eric Brown of Arlington – “Berries” photo taken at the Alexandria Farmers’ Market
All 2010 entries can be viewed on the VDACS Flickr site.
In 2010, eight Virginia farmers’ markets were ranked in the Top 20 in “America’s Favorite Farmers’ Market Contest” sponsored by the American Farmland Trust (AFT). Two markets, King George and Falls Church, took the top spot in their categories.
