Richmond, Va. – Governor Glenn Youngkin received five Fraser Fir Christmas trees and two wreaths from the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association (VCTGA) today to add to the Executive Mansion’s holiday decor. Two 12-foot, one 7-foot, and two 5-foot Fraser Fir trees and wreaths were delivered by Ian Hamilton, and his fiancé Sarah Thompson, of Olde Church Christmas Tree Farm in Powhatan, Va. Following the presentation, Governor Youngkin presented the family with a proclamation naming December as Virginia Christmas Tree Month.
“Nothing represents the holiday season more than a fresh cut Virginia Christmas tree. A very important sector of the Commonwealth's agriculture and forestry industries, the growing and selling of Virginia Christmas Trees provides a significant boost to our state’s economy,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Thank you to the VCTGA and Hamilton family for delivering these beautiful trees and wreaths to Virginia’s executive mansion.”
The Commonwealth ranks eighth nationally in Christmas tree production with annual sales averaging around $25 million. Virginia Christmas tree farmers grow cypress, fir, pine, and spruce, on more than 9,000 acres in the Commonwealth, for wholesale, retail, and choose-and-cut customers. Grayson, Loudoun, Culpeper, Floyd, and Scott counties lead the state in production acreage.
“No matter where you reside in the state, you don’t have to look hard to find a Virginia Christmas tree,” said Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Matthew Lohr. “You can make great family memories and support local farmers by visiting one of our more than 480 Christmas tree farms in Virginia.”
Search for Virginia Christmas tree farm online by visiting the VCTGA website at https://virginiachristmastrees.org. Along with choose-and-cut and pre-cut trees, many farms also sell fresh-made wreaths, garlands, holiday greenery, roping, centerpieces, and tree stands. Some offer special touches for a memorable family experience such as hot beverages, holiday treats, and Christmas shops. Customers should call ahead to confirm availability, hours of operation and any safety requirements.
