Live Bird Market System
The Office of Veterinary Services is responsible for administration of the state’s Prevention and Control of Avian Influenza in the Live-Bird Marketing System regulation. Live-bird markets allow consumers to select the live bird(s) of their choice. Birds may be resold, or the market will slaughter and dress the birds for consumers to take home.
This regulation requires Virginia’s Live-Bird Marketing System suppliers, distributors and markets to register with the State Veterinarian’s Office. Certain protocols are in place to control disease, especially high pathogenic and low pathogenic Avian Influenza.
